Resources for More Information

https://www.shakuhachi.com/

This is the website for Tai Hei Shakuhachi, a business run by a man named Monty Levenson who has been making Shakuhachi since the 1970s. This website has a vast amount of information available; the home page describes it as a “total resource for Shakuhachi - the traditional Japanese bamboo flute.” There is a storefront page with a wide range of shakuhachi models for sale from beginner to professional level, as well as attachments for Western metal flutes that can give it a shakuhachi sound. Other pages include playing guides for learning the instrument, catalogs of repertoire available for the instrument, and recordings of various performances.

This is a website run by John Holland, a Shakuhachi enthusiast. He teaches private lessons in his unique "hon-on" shakuhachi style. This website has a lot of great information on modern developments of the Shakuhachi and how the instrument's style is evolving. There are multiple video tutorials covering the basics of the instrument for first-time learners. He also has an archive of surviving traditional Shakuhachi repertoire.
